Size of iOS

Yesterday I have updated my iOS to version 12.0. My iPhone has only 16 GB of storage and that sometimes causes troubles. Occasionaly I look at the iPhone Storage in Settings and I do some cleaning. I was surprised and wondering why does the "Other", which is basically the iOS, take so much space. Apple should know that there are still people in this world that use iPhones with 16 GB storage every day. I followed several recipes how to increase the free space in iPhone, but still: why does the iOS take so much space? This week I have found an article on OSXDaily ,  describing a very unusual way (for me) how to reduce the "Other" storage space. Before I tried this method, my "Other" took around 8 GB of storage. Then I connected my iPhone to iTunes, actually I did a back up, one restart and in total waited approximately 30 minutes (the iPhone was still connected to iTunes via cable). No idea what happened but the system really reduced its size, to 6.7 GB...

The grayscale challenge

There was an article in NY Times about turning phones to grayscale. I found it while waiting in line in a theatre, January 18th. The line was long and as anybody else in the line, I was holding my phone in front of my face, reading and texting. The basic idea is that the colors bring attention and with turning them down you can control the attention. I do not want to repeat once written, here is the original article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/12/technology/grayscale-phone.html Immediately I used the display filter on my iPhone and turned display into grayscale. I did not find it strange first. After more than two months, I turned the display back to normal color mode. Here are my personal observations: Text : Obviously, no problems. Reading online can be even better, because you can ignore ads more easily. Camera : I like black and white photography, it was OK. Images : My photos were OK, however with some pictures from other people I wished to see colors. Video : Watc...

Nonmainstream visit of Niagara Falls

That weekend supposed to be cold (6 & 7 January 2018). Very cold. In fact, later we got to know it was one of the coldest weekends in the history of New York City. This temperature drop was expected to happen after a bomb cyclone a few days earlier. My plans for the weekend were simple - stay at home, keep myself warm and fed, perhaps cinema with a friend. ... and then on Friday, in the evening, Johnny texted me ... That idea was so crazy that I canceled all my plans. We (Vivi, Johnny, Boris and me) met in the City next morning and took an Uber to Newark Airport to rent a car there (it is cheaper). PS: This is not our car, but our car was later almost as dirty as this one. Expected travel time to Niagara falls from Newark was around 6.5 hours. Probably in the summer and without traffic. It took us almost 10 hours. We survived snowstorms and freezing darkness on some county roads, far, far away from highways. But we saw some interesting places and had fun. It coul...

First Hawaii, then Oregon

Why? Hawaii - the international conference on MR ( ISMRM ) happened to be in Honolulu in 2017.  Oregon - to counterbalance volcanic islands with sunny beaches and volcanic mountain with snow. Part One: No Glamping in Hawaiian Islands Island One: Kauai After comfy 24-hour economy flights with Eva and Fabian, and just as I started to watch Moana , we landed in Lihue (Kauai). I assembled with Pedro, we took a rental car and quickly found our room in cosy  Kauai Palms Hotel . For lunch next day we met Andrea in Kapaa and together we headed to see Wailua Falls, not far from Lihue. We left Andrea in Kapaa later that day and for our next night we were going to camp at  Koke'e State Park Campground  (thanks Evka for help with fixing my tent!). The night was very cold, roosters were loud and views from Kalalau Lookout were astonishing! It was time to warm up and see some beach so we decided to get a nice cup of coffee and visit a beach with restricted access fo...

Inspiring music in Casey Neistat's vlogs

After watching a few vlogs by Casey Neistat on Youtube, I couldn't help notice the well-chosen music in the background. Particularly music by one artist named Julian Avila. Here is his music:  https://soundcloud.com/julian_avila Inspired, I took several months old videos I shot on GoPro Hero 2 when I was biking to Kahlenberg in the rain. After a few hours and two whiskeys, this came from my computer:

Yamaha S08 - sticky keys repair

My keyboard Yamaha S08  suffered from several "sticky keys" disease already a year, perhaps more. That saying, I am pretty bad piano player. However, I like to have my devices fully functional for any cases. I have found a very helpful guide , but with no photos. I made some for better visualization of the repair. First, I unfastened all screws from both sides: Second, I unfastened all screws from a wooden base plate which were holding the part with electronics. Then I unfastened the golden screws holding the whole keyboard to the wood. The keyboard was now accessible from both sides. The last step is described in the following video. It was just removing the sticky keys and reinserting them without a metal spring coming inside. The end of the metal spring has been left outside of the key: So far it works well!

Ski touring in High Tatras - Veľká Studená Dolina

Winter 2015 was quite cold. Especially in the High Tatras in Slovakia. So ... we went there to do some ski touring! Lukas booked a room in village Gerlachov for one night (6.1.2015). The rest of the trip (7. - 8.1.) we stayed in the hut - Zbojnícka chata (1960 m). We took a bunch of old CD's with us in the car. Lukas, as the master DJ,  discovered some classics and we listened to, among others, Inner Circle's hits . Fortunately, the road to Gerlachov was not that long. The view on the High Tatras from our room was great even at freezing night. As usual, Lukas brought some materials to read. Our avalanche bible by Bruce Tremper and some other relevant books. I really enjoyed reading the book by Mišo Diviak - Bujón v šumienke  - over the whole trip. The next morning we got up early, made great egg omelette for breakfast and on our way to Starý Smokovec we saw city of Poprad waking up. The snow layer was quite shallow, but that was about to change s...

Ze života traktoristu

Pátek Traktorista Fero išel združstva domo. Nevedzel a nevidzel, jak ho to tahalo šregem do šenku. "Lojzka, nalej, boha-ci, jaký sem smadný," zachrapčal Fero. "Na sekeru ci nedám, any čo bys mal padesát korun. Ic domo." "Any ty mi nedáš, Frno?" Frno, který sedzel vedla neho, bol cicho. "Frno. Gusto s kríglem v ruke zastal pred Ferem a takto nanho čudným pohladem kukel. "V rodzine si rob porádky, ne v šenku. S tvoju tlstú, bych si to nescel vymenyt." Gusto šlahel kríge...

Reglue your skins too!

Last year, me and my friend Lukas, we planned another skitour trip to High Tatras in Slovakia. However a couple of last skitters I complained about the quality of the glue on my skins. Usually when I saw Lukas or Michal going uphill without no problems and me fighting with my skis and the mountain. The time for regluing of my skins finally came. I used very general and easy intructions I found on the web: Put the paper on the sticky part of the skins, heat it up with an iron. When you feel the glue is hot, semi-liquid (and stinks, as in my case) - remove the paper. The paper contains the dirt and also some glue. Repeat the step 2 till all the the glue is gone. Uniformly spread the new glue over the skins. I used the glue by Austrian company  Kohla . Wait several hours till the glue dryes (this depends on the glue manufacturer). Here are some photos of the whole process. Prepare a lot of paper and some (preferably old) iron. This is an example of the dirt and...

Welcome, to Kebnekaise National Park - 2nd trailer!

This time I used the Lightworks 12 instead of iMovie 10 for video editing. I was quite satisfied with the Lightworks.

Vták - ver. 0.3

Prozaické dielo Vták, nie je len o vtákoch. Je aj o niečom inom. Po večeroch som ho spolu s MB písal cez icq, podobnou technikou ako aj naše básničky, teda primerane sme sa striedali po vetách. Bolo to v roku Pána 2005.

Good morning ISS!

I set my alarm clock to 2-3 am to spot the ISS three mornings in a row this week. Today was the day when morning sky looked good and most importantly - I had the mood to get out of the bed. I prepared Canon 350D with remote controller some days ago. The tripod is from my small astro-telescope . The email from HQ-spotthestation@mail.nasa.gov said this: Time: Fri May 23 4:15 AM, Visible: 4 min, Max Height: 66 degrees, Appears: W, Disappears: NE My location was the road between Bratislava and Kittsee. There I aimed the camera somewhere to the sky. With 18 mm lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6) I was not afraid that I miss the flyby of the station. I took some testing shots just to be sure. The sky was quite bright around 4 am therefore I set ISO to 100. The lens focusing was set to manual mode. I couldn't see the station exactly at 4:15 most probably because of the morning haze. Suddenly it appeared and with full of joy and excitement I pressed the shutter wit...
